{"id":2,"date":"2015-02-28T17:44:47","date_gmt":"2015-02-28T17:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bacwood.com\/wp\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2017-06-01T14:45:13","modified_gmt":"2017-06-01T14:45:13","slug":"sample-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bacwood.com\/wp\/?page_id=2","title":{"rendered":"Management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A disturbing conclusion from the <span style=\"color: #000000;\">recent<\/span>\u00a0<em>State of Nature<\/em>\u00a0report, <span style=\"color: #333333;\">compiled<\/span> by a coalition of environmental organisations, was that\u00a0<em>60% of the species studied have declined over recent decades. More than one in ten of all the species assessed are under threat of disappearing from our shores altogether; and this trend is worryingly mirrored in Surrey and across the south east of England \u00a0\u2026 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em>This decline is occurring despite a 5% increase in woodland cover since 1990. According to the\u00a0Surrey Wildlife Trust, the present approach where most woodland is\u00a0<em>un<\/em>managed is simply not working. A more intentional, strategic approach to woodland management is needed.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011 Sable Wood, unmanaged for the last two or three decades, exhibited some of the signs of decline: growing dominance by a few species, particularly non-native invasive species, with consequent loss of biodiversity, diminution of aesthetic appeal and an impoverished home for wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>A first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bacwood.com\/mngmntplans\/Sable%20Wood%20MP%20v2%2016%20Jan%202014.pdf\" target=\"blank\">Management Plan<\/a><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bacwood.com\/mngmntplans\/Sable%20Wood%20MP%20v2%2016%20Jan%202014.pdf\" target=\"blank\">\u00a0<\/a> <\/b>was completed in January 2014. \u00a0Management of Sable Wood is designed to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>maintain a healthy age distribution of trees and other vegetation<\/li>\n<li>enable light to reach the woodland floor<\/li>\n<li>protect and promote the ecosystems that are naturally consistent with the climate, the underlying geology and soil, and the flora and fauna they support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Management will follow a <em>closed cover<\/em> approach. \u00a0No area will be clear-felled of undesirable species; rather there will be a progressive and relatively slow thinning of undesired species at a rate that allows native species to naturally take their place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A disturbing conclusion from the recent\u00a0State of Nature\u00a0report, compiled by a coalition of environmental organisations, was that\u00a060% of the species studied have declined over recent decades.
