31 December<\/b> Draft Management Plan released for review by representatives of Surrey Hills, Surrey Wildlife Trust, Good Woods and The Bourne Conservation Group.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

20 December<\/b> Three oak signposts installed at entry points.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

20 November<\/b> Map on website modified to show footpath unsuitable for horses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

19 November<\/b> Management activities re-commence with cutting back of laurel, rhododendron and gaultheria.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

06 August<\/b> Visit by woodlands advisor Sean Harrison as part of the Good Woods<\/em> project. Young male and female adders observed in heathland area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

04 June<\/b> Observed slowworm anguis fragilis<\/em><\/a> in leaf litter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

04 June<\/b> Sowed further wild flower seeds in glade, including ladybird-friendly varieties Chrysanthemum segetum<\/em><\/a> (Corn marigold or corn daisy), Ammi majus<\/em><\/a> (Bishop’s weed), Centaurea cyanus<\/em><\/a> (Cornflower), Chrysanthemum leucanthemum<\/em><\/a> (Oxeye daisy) and Borago officinalis<\/em><\/a> (Starflower).<\/p>\n

Late note: there is no evidence that any of the wildflower seeds germinated. This matches anecdotal evidence from the Bourne Conservation Group, who have met with similar lack of success in sowing wildflower seeds in the poor soils of this area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

02 June<\/b> Baseline assessment of Sable Wood under the Woodland Star Rating<\/em> scheme. The current level is Bronze.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

18 May<\/b> Attended Woodlands and Sustainable Management conference organised by Surrey Wildlife Trust, Rowhill Nature Reserve, Aldershot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

16 May<\/b> Cleared felled trunks from glade and sowed wild flower seeds (bee-friendly flowers, including Phacelia tanacetifolia<\/em><\/a>, Echium plantagineum<\/em><\/a>, Cosmos sulphureus<\/em><\/a> and Onobrychis viciifolia<\/em>)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

14 May<\/b> More clearing of young pine and birch from heather area in Sable. Applied Roundup to rhododendron stumps. Installed notice board at NE entrance. Cleared 10m diameter glade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

13 April<\/b> Open day to meet users of the wood, to gather their knowledge and experience of the wood and to discuss actions that will improve biodiversity and encourage wildlife.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
