Sable Wood

Sable Wood is a 6 acre (2.6ha) plot of woodland located in the Lower Bourne, Farnham. It was purchased by the present owners in December 2011 with the objective of maintaining and restoring important habitats, improving biodiversity and encouraging wildlife. In a world where so often the needs of the natural environment are subjugated to commercial and industrial interests, Sable Wood is intended to be a place where wildlife has priority.

This website

  • provides reference information for visitors to the wood
  • documents the gradual evolution of the wood towards greater numbers and varieties of native deciduous trees and shrubs and away from domination by conifers and invasive species
  • documents aspects of the flora and fauna found in the wood

A longer term strategy and priorities for action are set out in a Management Plan, developed according to Forestry Commission guidelines.  Click here to view and download the Plan.

Five public footpaths traverse Sable Wood. We hope that visitors to the wood, many of whom are daily visitors, will appreciate and enjoy the slow evolution of the wood away from its recent history as a commercial coniferous plantation and towards a state more typical of English deciduous woodland with a greater variety of flora and fauna. We seek the cooperation of visitors to restrict themselves to the public footpaths so that the creatures and ecosystems may live and develop with the minimum of human disturbance.
