1950s
It was probably in the 1950s that Scots pine were originally planted by the Forestry Commission.
1980s
The Great Storm of October 1987 brought down many Scots pine in the lower part of the wood; their rotting trunks still lie in various parts of the wood. Photographs taken the day after the storm show almost entirely bare woodland floor.
1990s – 2000s
No active management of the wood seems to have taken place after the storm. Large numbers of Scots pine grew from the pine cones on the woodland floor, along with many native birch. Crowded together and competing for light, these trees were/are poor specimens, tall but with thin trunks. Again, the woodland floor became dark.
