Activities in 2022

Jan/Feb Ring barked a number of large Scots pine in subcompartment Com 2.  The purpose is to cause the canopy foliage to die off, allowing more light to reach the woodland floor. At the same time the trunk remains standing, providing habitat for birds, bats and insects.

June The results of the progressive thinning of Scots pine and the removal of invasive rhododendron and gaultheria in sub-compartment Com 2 are seen in this photograph, where native deciduous species are flourishing in the understorey.

22 Nov Installed small pond in sub-compartment Com 1.

Sable Wood has no natural watercourses; water drains freely through the sandy soil. The pond used a cast-off children’s paddling pool as the impervious container, covered with black plastic (the paddling pool is bright blue) and lined with stones.
